Billy Elliot, a coal miner's son in Northern England, faces a major change in life when he stumbles upon a ballet class during his weekly boxing lesson. The 11-year old boy soon finds himself immersed in dance, demonstrating the exact talent that the instructor, Mrs. Wilkinson, was scouting for. With a never-ending stream of cigarettes, Mrs. Wilkinson's zest for teaching is revived when she sees Billy's potential.
“Just because I like ballet don't mean I'm a poof, you know.”
My Review
Although not usually a great fan of musicals or dance-based movies, Billy Elliot took me by surprise. I went into the movie expecting to love it less that I did when the credits rolled by. One of the main things I admired about the film was it's inspirational message. It reminds us of the human potential to transcend the expectations of society by doing something so simple, and yet sometimes so very difficult, as simply being ourselves. This message was majestically shone through the heart-warming scenes sprinkled throughout the film, and the moving interactions between the characters. Another reason for my newfound love of the movie is the great acting. Honestly, I think there couldn't have been a better cast than this one! Jamie Bell did a wonderful job as Billy Elliot. His portrayal is splendid as he allows the audience to see the emotions, through his eyes, as he makes his way through this dancing journey. So, in summary, I would say that if you are craving an upbeat-yet-moving film that is highlighted with a beautiful soundtrack, go for Billy Elliot!
