The story paints the picture of a non-biological family that relies on shoplifting to cope with a life of poverty. On the margins of Tokyo, the dysfunctional band of outsiders is united by fierce loyalty and a penchant for petty theft. When the young son is arrested, secrets are exposed that upend their tenuous, below-the-radar existence.

My Review
Shoplifters presents such a touching story, that evokes so many emotions from it's viewer. It does it so well! Seemingly simple as first, the story develops and evolves into something much for fascinating. It's a pure, surreal, and interestingly narrated drama that touches the subject of morality, trust, guilt, and humanity in an unconventional ways with so much fun, humour and charm. In fact, you'd find yourself expecting a certain happy ending, but the film manages to stick to reality, and challenges social norms. It offers insight to a world unknown to most, where people long for family love and they're desperate to have someone to call family. I must admit, it made me tear up quite a few times. And, this couldn't have been done without the marvelous acting from the exceptional cast. Every character completes one another, creating a wonderful story that is told in a brilliant way. It's something you won't be able to relate anything to and that's what makes it a must watch! Filmmaking at its finest!
